Course Description:
Both the Full and Half Marathons are loop courses with the start and finish line located at our County Fairgrounds on Argyle Street in the town of Friday Harbor. The marathon offers one very scenic out and back along the west side of San Juan Island, offering views of both Haro Strait and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Views of Vancouver Island and the City of Victoria can be seen from here. If you're lucky, you'll spot eagles and maybe a pod of Orcas. Both the Full and the Half offers classic rolling hills and views of farmlands that make up the interior of the island. Being that the island is hilly, both courses are challenging, but very rewarding. The Marathon is USATF certified. The Half is slightly longer than 13.1, about .3 of a mile making it more like 13.4 miles. For more information email: clark@runninginthesanjuans.com
Update, April 9: Again for this year we are planning a most wonderful event. I have been running some parts of the course and still, after living here for 12 years, am amazed by the beauty the island affords. The scenery is, along with our wonderful volunteers, makes our race such a great event. Please, come join us this June. - Clark
Update, May 20: Over the years we have known that our Half Marathon course was long, meaning over 13.1 miles and we have now confirmed that our course is long and by as much as .8 miles.
In order to provide a accurate or close to accurate Half Marathon course we have change the last mile to shave off the extra length. Now runners will pass the 12 mile mark, at the corner of Golf Course Road and Cattlepoint Road. Then continue towards town, turning on Argyle and follow Argyle up the hill to the finish line at the our fair grounds. I will have a new map posted later in this week.
